A Nice reminder of 'Summertime' from FB" 10 '15

FaceBook just reminded me that I had posted this photo  two years ago today.  

These oil paintings were what remained from my featured artist exhibit, titled 'Summertime' which held at Charleston Artist Guild in 2013. Many of the paintings from that series sold at that exhibit. After the Charleston exhibit closed, I moved the remaining paintings to the Applewood Gallery.   This  was a pleasant reminder of how the series captured the sense of summertime playfulness of summer in the low country.

Another perfect day at CAG 5 '15

Spent a perfect afternoon in hanging out in the Charleston Artists Gallery talking to the crowds of art lovers who are in town for the Spoletto Festival.  I also hung  some of my new paintings from my "Buy Local" series .Here's a preview of one of them:

My new 'Buy Local Series' paintings are signed, sealed, and ready to deliver to the Charleston Artists Gallery on Saturday.  Now I need to find the best  way to arrange them together before they get hung on the gallery walls..  The best way, I have found,  to do that is to measure off  areas. on my floor  that are the same dimensions as my wall-space(s).  (If you are unfamiliar with where you are going to be hanging, it is a good idea to visit or at least call the gallery ahead to verify the dimensions of where you will be and ask about any potential obstacles within that space  e.g. I once found myself working  around some light switches) Sometimes I use  blue painters tape, and sometimes I use the tiles themselves to mark the edges).  I  then start arranging the paintings  within that space until I come up with a pleasing combination.  Once I am satisfied with the layout, I take a quick reference photo, and mark down on a piece of paper the number of inches between each painting, and the number of inches the top and bottom paintings are  from the ceiling and floor.  Together the photo and layout measurements give me a quick way to start hanging once I arrive at the gallery.  If I have multiple columns of paintings I start hanging from the lower right and work up.  If I am only hanging a single column, I work from the top down. 

It may seem like a lot of extra work, but taking the time to do this one extra step is worth it. It's amazing how much smoother the art goes up with a little advance planning.

New Painting at CAG Gallery 4'14

Goose at Swan Lake

Last week, The Charleston Artists Guild sold one of my wildlife paintings.  Today I took a painting  in to fill the space on my wall.  It is a  9" x 12" oil of a Canadian Goose sitting on a Cypress Tree root.  It has always been one of my favorites in my wildlife series.  First of all, because it is actually the first wildlife I ever attempted in South Carolina, and second because I love the story behind it.

Swan Lake Iris Gardens is a County Park in Sumter ,South Carolina.  It is famous not only for its beautiful Japanese Iris which grow throughout the cypress swamp but for being home to all eight of the world's swan species.  I timed my first visit to the Park with what should have been the peak of iris bloom.  Ironically, there was barely an iris  blossom to be seen any where in the park.    Eventually I found out why.  All the swans were nesting in the iris patches.  Every so often one would lift its neck up and munch on the tender buds of what would have been an Iris flower.  The only blooming Iris I found that day were by this one goose.   Presumably, it too had build a nest nearby, and was protecting it from the swans, which allowed the Iris a chance to blossom.

I needed to deliver some paintings to the Charleston Artists Gallery.  The sun is out, the skies clear, and the temperature is pleasant for the first time in weeks.  The quality of light was perfect for taking reference photos of the Charleston's beautiful architecture.  Pretty sure this one will wind up as a painting soon.

In support of Southeastern Wildlife Exposition 2 '14

The February 14 – 16, 2014 Southeastern Wildlife Exposition is a major event in the South Carolina and Charleston calendar.  I am helping to support the event by exhibiting  a wall of my paintings of South eastern birds at the Charleston Artist Guild.

People's Choice Exhibit Reception 10 '13

There was a huge turnout for the People's Choice Exhibition Reception in Charleston this evening...Bruce had to try three times before he could clear enough space to take a picture of me with my entry: " Oconee State Park" Good food, good music, good company, and lots of great art.  What more can one ask for?

It's Change-out time in all three galleries.   All of my artwork my existing  is being pulled from the Seacoast Artists Gallery in preparation for the SAG Fall Art Show and Sale which starts later this month.  My current exhibits  will come down and new artwork will   go up tomorrow in the Charleston Artists Gallery (tomorrow) and in the SAG Applewood Gallery later this week. ( more later).

Yesterday was Changeout Day at the Charleston Artist Guild. All 70 + artists brought in their new artwork. I was happy to find that I had been assigned to a large stand alone wall space. It was perfect for displaying the two large State Park Series paintings I had brought in.  Drop by today and be amongst the first see all of our new artwork

CAG Changeout day 7 '13

July 14th  was Changeout Day at the Charleston Artists Guild Gallery. All 70 + exhibiting  artists took down their art from the wall-space where they had been hanging on for the last quarter, moved the hanging equipment to their new assigned locations, then put up all new artwork.   It took a rocket scientist to figure out the logistics behind this move, and even so it is quite a huge challenge to get it all done in one day.   But by 6pm, everyone's artwork was hung, and the gallery looks brand new.

CAG Changeout Date

All the Exhibitors in the Charleston Artists Gallery (at 160 East Bay, Charleston) will be bringing in new their artwork today (July  14th) AND, Artist, Cecelia Campbell will be  in the CAG Gallery  from 11-6pm.  Good time to drop by to say "Hi" and to see all the beautiful new artwork the gallery that is going on display!

Spent a wonderful day exhibiting at Magnolia Gardens History Fair with the Charleston Artists Guild

One of the benefits of being a member of Charleston Artists Guild  is free admission to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens.  As a result, I have been there many times.  Yesterday, however was my first in mid-summer.  I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it is at this time of year.

When I wasn't hanging out at the CAG exhibit booth, I spent much of my free time in areas of the Plantation I had not visited before, like the Audubon Swamp Garden.

  You can get really close to the raucous juveniles and the rookery on the boardwalk through the swamp so it was not too late in the season to get some interesting bird photos.

 I also followed the bike path along the river and through the rice fields.

 The views along  that path were  spectacular as well.  Pretty sure some of these reference photos will become paintings as well
