THE MARKET COMMON WELCOMES THE SEACOAST ARTISTS GALLERY

(April 2, 2013) - The Market Common will welcome the Seacoast Artists Gallery to 3032 Nevers Street in April.  The Seacoast Artists Guild will host their 10th Annual Spring Art Show & Sale in the Seacoast Artists Gallery from April 17 - April 27 featuring artwork from local artists. After the show is closed, the Seacoast Artists Guild will re-open the Seacoast Artists Gallery on May 1, featuring works from over 60 exhibiting artists.  The Seacoast Artists Gallery will be open from noon until the center closes.  

Brooke Doswell, Vice President of BEI-Beach, LLC said, "Our search for an art gallery has been a long one and we are very excited that we have one that will display the work of all our wonderful local artists.   And one that will offer art classes and even more to the shoppers and residents of The Market Common."

Chaney Bay 3 '13

Remember that photo I posted of Chaney Bay in full bloom on 12/12/13? ( see  photo above)

I finally got around to painting it this week. Yellow is a difficult color for me to work with, but I really wanted to capture the 'stop ya dead in your tracks' dazzle of the yellow marsh daisies.

 I think I nailed it.  The painting will go on exhibit at CAG tomorrow.

Jane Woodward is an award-winning area painter with combined oil and acrylic experience covering more than thirty years.  She exhibits at area galleries and teaches both privately and for CCU’s OLLI program.  At the  Seacoast Artists Guild November  4th  2012  general meeting, Jane talked  about and demonstrated techniques for painting sky and clouds.

SAG Applewood Exhibitors get ready for Art Walk

Dropped by Applewoods for lunch yesterday  and was pleased to see  how seriously the Seacoast Artists Guild Exhibitors are taking the upcoming Pawleys Island Art Walk.

I don't think there was a blank spot on any wall and the artwork was outstanding

By the way the photos were taken as the place was closing so as not to violate any customers privacy.  Normally this popular eatery is packed with tourists

I  stopped into McClellanville, SC  for a visit to their Art Council. .  For a rural small town, McClellanville has a surprisingly large population of  visual artists, writers, musicians!  The town's commitment to  arts is  evident  in  their charming  Art Center/Gallery  (it is right in the center of town on Pickney Street), and in  the long list community art events and children's art  education programs they sponsor.  Check them out at http://mcclellanvilleartscouncil.com/

Landscape artist Mark Kelvin gave a presentation on ways of finding inspiration at the Charleston Artist Guild’s General Meeting last night ( 4/10/12).  He emphasized:

Birds in Art Exhibition at Brookgreen Gardens - through 4/22/12

I stopped by Brook green Gardens this morning to do a photo shoot of some of the spring bloom.... but  instead, I spent the morning admiring the  Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum of Wausau, Wisconsin, traveling exhibition: of " Birds in Art."  .   It was truly a great exhibit showing  a wide range of birds species presented by some of the best artists on our planet.  ( Sorreeee ...  no photos allowed in  or of the exhibit)  I  whole heatedly recommend a look see if you are in the area. Charleston Artists Guild just called to tell me they have sold my painting, "Full Bloom".

From Tree to Treasure Exhibit at the Chapin

Running in tandem with the Jameson exhibit at the Chapin Museum was an exhibit entitled " From Tree to Treasure". The 50 pieces on exhibit were the work of some of the finest woodworking craftsmen in the US, and the best I ever ever seen assembled together in a single exhibit. Definitely worth taking a look at this collection.

William Jameson's oil painting series "Woodland Textures" which is showing until April 26. What a fantastic exhibit. You could all but walk into some of those scenes.

"Mini art" -- little sales with big results

Each year the Seacoast Artist Guild's members donate miniature artwork painted on 4" x 4" or 4" x 6" gallery wrapped canvases.  They go on sale at Applewoods, a  popular local restaurant donates the space by their entrance to display the artwork, and collects &  processes the sales for the Guild.  The money is used to support art in the local school districts, and to provide art lessons for local youths.

I painted these eight little gems for the cause.  They'll be on sale from November through Christmas .

Now Showing at Charleston Artist Guild Gallery

You may remember from an earlier post this summer that I have been accepted into the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery  on East Bay Street.  October 1st was the  installation day. 

 In a lot of  galleries,  a new artist is often e relegated to spaces the back of gallery.  Imagine my surprise when I found my work was placed on the main corridor and clearly visible from the entrance. 

What a wonderful start!.

Seafarer Series installed at Island Art Gallery

 A whole new set of my paintings were installed at the Island Art Gallery.  All but one of them were clustered together to form a grouping  based around  a "seafarer" theme.

 The remaining painting was placed on an easel just inside the entrance so it could be seen immediately when one entered the gallery

 The majority of the paintings are about boats... fishing  boats, sailboats, oyster boats, row boats.. etc.  but had no trouble slipping in a bit of humor   such as a boat full of pelicans

 or throwing in a bit of seafaring infrastructure such as the North Island Lighthouse or the Pawley's Island Yacht Club.

Just Art Show at Prevost Gallery

Top three Award Winners

 The "Just Art Show" at Prevost Gallery in the Rice Museum, Georgetown, SC is a small but classy affair. Thirty five quality paintings are hung . Best in show, first second, third, and honorable mention awards are given.

This year the judge seemed to prefer abstract work ( four out of the five awards went to more abstract pieces) But as always spread the awards over different media: oil, watercolor, acrylic, and textile. The watercolor close-up of peaches below garnered honorable mention.

My work was the small plein air of the Georgetown steel mill on the upper right

My work, while too small and traditional for an award, was hung towards the entrance which is a good sign that the museum liked the piece and thought that the public would as well.
